After a long winter, we are finally seeing temperatures on the rise! As summer begins, it is important to consider senior safety. Seniors are more prone to heat-related illness and dehydration. There are many chronic illnesses and prescription medications that affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature.

Here are some Senior Safety Tips to consider this summer:

  • Check your senior’s air conditioning system to make sure that it works properly.
  • Make sure that your senior is drinking plenty of fluids. Consuming food and drink with sodium and potassium will help restore electrolyte balance as necessary.
  • Move exercise indoors. Rather than walking around the neighborhood, encourage your senior to go to the indoor mall for a walk or head to the gym and use the treadmill. The pool is also an excellent way to get exercise in the hot months of summer.
  • Be aware of signs of dehydration. The most common signs are thirst, irritability, decreased skin elasticity, and confusion.images
